How much does a website cost?

A “cheap” website can be damaging to your brand. Our goal is to provide you with creative, affordable, unique website design that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

I need a new website! How much does it cost?

Web Design Cost

So here’s the scenario: You’re setting up your own business, and you know you need a website. (Or do you..? Check out our post Ditch the website).

You’re thinking:

  1. “How much does a website cost?”
  2. “Should I / Can I do it myself?”

Your friend Alissa told you that she just set up her own website using WordPress. If Alissa can do it, you can do it, right? How hard can it be?! Well, Alissa has very few responsibilities and loads of time, while you’re frantically trying to run a household, get your business admin in order, deal with suppliers, spend time with your family..

Sound familiar? So you’re ready to get someone to help you with your website.

Website Cost

So, what about the budget? How much DOES a website cost?

You’ve already heard it before: the price of a website varies depending on what you need. Or, “how long is a piece of string?”.

Well, you’ve also heard the saying “you get what you pay for!”

Below is a breakdown of what to expect per price category.

Under R3000

It is possible to get a website for less than R3000, however this would generally consist of a very basic template website. The problem with a template is that it doesn’t allow your company to stand out, and your website could look exactly the same as someone else’s, which can be damaging to your brand.

Often, companies that offer websites in this price range are not fully experienced in web design or development. These companies offer you a “cheap” or quick solution by using a pre-created template, which does not allow your website needs to expand later.

Don’t expect proper SEO optimisation on a “cheap” website either – this usually needs to be done afterwards by an experienced professional. (As a rule, we include basic SEO setup with all of our websites.)

SUMMARY: The problem with templates or “cheap” website offers:
  • Your brand won’t stand out
  • Your website may look the same as someone else’s,
  • Damaging to your brand
  • Limited development options
  • Limited or no Google optimisation options
R3000 to R5000

A basic 3 to 5-page website could fall within this range, but still may not include custom design or SEO Setup.

Keep in mind that you will also need to consider:

  • Domain and Hosting: Will I register my own domain (ie. the “www.mycompany.co.za” address of your website), or do I need my website company to do this for me?
  • Copywriting: Do I have all the content that I need, or do I need assistance in preparing my website copy?
  • Gallery: Does the price include a gallery to display my products / services showcase?
  • Blog: Will my website have a Blog or News section?
R5000 to R9000

This is the standard price range for a 3 to 5-page website, with branded design and SEO Setup. The website should also include items such as:

  • Custom web page layouts
  • Enquiry or booking forms
  • Gallery / Image Sliders
  • Basic blog
R9000 to R15000

Websites in this category either have lots of pages, or are basic e-commerce websites.

Websites with 10+ pages

More pages on your website means more content for visitors to browse through, and more pages for Google to rank in searches (however, there are various factors that contribute to Google rankings – page content is only 1 of many).

Basic e-commerce website

If you’re selling products, it’s great to have a Products Catalogue on your website. There are various ways to showcase your products on a website, such as through a gallery, image slider, or products catalogue. The catalogue allows your visitors to browse through various details of your products (descriptions, photos) and to select and order certain items.

The products catalogue system does not necessarily have to include an online purchase option, but can function as a catalogue with an order request functionality instead.

R15000 and up

If you have a website with a high volume of products (more than 50), or for websites with advanced or custom development requirements, you would be looking at a price range of R15 000 and upwards.
